Several
ferry companies provide connections to Crete from mainland Greece
and the islands.
Anek and
Minoan Lines provide year round daily
services from Piraeus (Athens) to the main ports of Chania and
Heraklion.
Since 2009 Lane Lines provides the connection between
Rethymnon and
Piraeus using a traditional ferry - the Vicencos Kornaros - but only once a week though,
leaving Piraeus on Friday evening, arriving in Rethymnon on Saturday
morning. The return journey leaves from Rethymnon on Sunday evening
and arrives in Pireaus on Monday morning. This service is provided summer and winter.
For the summer in 2010 only, the Vicencos Kornaros provides also a
service connecting Rethymnon with Kalamata on the Peloponnese, via
Kythira. It leaves Rethymnon on Saturday, early afternoon and
arrives in Kalamata before midnight. It returns almost immediately,
arriving back in Rethymnon at about 10.30am on the Sunday. For more
details, check the Lane Lines website (in Greek only on last check).
Further afield there are several ports
on Crete which have ferry connections to the islands and mainland
Greece. These include Kastelli/Kissamos in the West, and Agios
Nikolaos and Sitia in the East.
Update: as of 01/12/2009 the Anek Office has been shut down. No
ANEK ferry for Rethymnon in the foreseeable future then.
As the ferry schedule between Rethymnon and Piraeus has seen many
changes in the past, we strongly recommend that you check the
website of the company you intend to travel with.
